Shoreline Sport & Spine was established in the spring of 2005 by Dave Van Andel and Marty Sytsema. Each of them had successful careers underway, Dave in the Grand Haven area and Marty in Muskegon. They opened their practice in Spring Lake, between the two. Their goal was to bring functional rehabilitation to patients, physicians, athletes and employers along the lakeshore.
“I started the clinic with Marty to do therapy the way we wanted to do it- Mind, Body, Spirit - hands on, fun, and holistic. We wanted to fundamentally change our view of going to work and create a place where we would thoroughly enjoy what we were doing and who we were doing it with,” says Dave.
“We noticed that there was an unfilled niche combining manual therapy and functional exercises,” says Marty.
Following the functional medicine approach, the care at S3 centers on the individual person and attempts to discover the root cause of an injury or weakness. Treatments address the diagnosis but focus mainly on the overall function of the whole person for sustained wellness and injury prevention.
Shoreline Sport & Spine is different in the holistic and functional approach they take to physical therapy. There are other differences as well. There are no physical therapy assistants or techs employed here. Each patient’s visit is with a certified physical therapist. Although the staff members collaborate on patient care and treatments, the patient’s experience is a one-on-one relationship with their therapist.
Another difference is the large, wide-open treatment space. It is more conducive to the functional approach. Because as we function in the world our motions are three dimensional, and other parts of the body move in relation to the injured or weak part. So you won’t see expensive weight machines or equipment designed to isolate your body's movement. Exercises administered here resemble more how a body moves through life, as opposed to the push-pull motion of one isolated set of muscles.
Take a look around Shoreline Sport & Spine and you will see a therapy experience like no other. Choose Shoreline Sport & Spine for your physical therapy and you will discover what rehabilitation can truly be when it comes from the hands of experts.
